Social Media Image Sizes: Complete Guide for 2026

Getting your social media image sizes wrong means cropped logos, blurry profile photos, and posts that look amateur before anyone reads a word. Each platform has its own dimension requirements, and they change often enough that last year's cheat sheet might already be outdated.

This guide collects every image dimension for every major platform in one place. Bookmark it, use it when you need it, and skip to the platform section for the full breakdown — or jump straight to the master table below.

Need to hit an exact size fast? Pixotter's resize tool handles it in seconds — no upload, no account, no watermark.

Each section below goes deeper into a specific platform with file size limits, format requirements, and tips for avoiding common cropping mistakes.

Instagram Image Sizes

Instagram renders all images at 1080px wide. Upload anything smaller and Instagram upscales it, which softens the image noticeably.

Placement Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Feed post (portrait) 1080 x 1350 4:5 8 MB
Feed post (square) 1080 x 1080 1:1 8 MB
Feed post (landscape) 1080 x 566 1.91:1 8 MB
Story 1080 x 1920 9:16 30 MB
Reel cover 1080 x 1920 9:16
Carousel slide 1080 x 1080 or 1080 x 1350 1:1 or 4:5 8 MB
Profile picture 320 x 320 (min) 1:1 (circular)

Default to 4:5 portrait for feed posts. It takes up ~35% more screen space than landscape, which translates directly into higher engagement. The first slide in a carousel sets the aspect ratio for every other slide — plan accordingly.

Facebook Image Sizes

Facebook displays different crops on desktop and mobile, so always upload at the largest recommended resolution and let Facebook scale down.

Image Type Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Shared image post 1200 x 630 1.91:1 30 MB
Cover photo 820 x 312 (desktop) ~2.63:1 15 MB
Story 1080 x 1920 9:16 30 MB
Profile photo 320 x 320 1:1 15 MB
Event cover 1920 x 1005 1.91:1 15 MB
Group cover 1640 x 856 1.91:1 15 MB
Shared link preview 1200 x 628 1.91:1 8 MB

Cover photo gotcha: The mobile view crops roughly 90px from each side of the desktop image. Keep logos and text inside a centered 640 x 312 px safe zone.

Twitter/X Image Sizes

X rebranded, but the image specs stayed the same. Profile photos display as circles, headers stretch across the full profile width, and in-feed images crop to 16:9 by default.

Image Type Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
In-stream photo 1200 x 675 16:9 5 MB
Header image 1500 x 500 3:1 5 MB
Profile photo 400 x 400 1:1 2 MB
Card image 1200 x 628 1.91:1 5 MB
2-image layout (each) 700 x 800 7:8 5 MB

Multi-image posts use different crops. A single image shows as 16:9. Two images each show as 7:8 (portrait). Three images show one large 7:8 and two smaller. Prepare your images for the specific layout you intend to use.

Full specs including multi-image grids and GIF requirements: Twitter/X image size guide.

LinkedIn Image Sizes

LinkedIn is the strictest about blurry or poorly cropped images — a pixelated profile banner on a professional network makes a bad first impression. Upload at the exact recommended resolution.

Image Type Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Post image (landscape) 1200 x 627 ~1.91:1 10 MB
Post image (square) 1080 x 1080 1:1 10 MB
Personal profile banner 1584 x 396 4:1 8 MB
Company page cover 1128 x 191 ~5.9:1 8 MB
Profile photo 400 x 400 1:1 (circular) 8 MB
Article cover 1200 x 644 ~1.86:1 10 MB
Event cover 1600 x 900 16:9 10 MB

The banner is the most visible real estate on your profile. Use 1584 x 396 for personal profiles — company page covers are a completely different size (1128 x 191). Do not reuse one for the other.

Need to check your image's aspect ratio before uploading? Use the image aspect ratio calculator. For the full LinkedIn spec breakdown: LinkedIn banner size guide.

TikTok Image Sizes

TikTok is primarily video, but images still matter for profile photos, video thumbnails, and the cover images that display on your profile grid.

Asset Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Profile photo 200 x 200 (min) 1:1 5 MB
Video thumbnail / cover 1080 x 1920 9:16 5 MB
In-Feed ad image 1200 x 628 or 640 x 640 1.91:1 or 1:1 500 KB
Branded Effect thumbnail 162 x 162 1:1 1 MB

Video covers crop to a square on your profile grid. Upload at 1080 x 1920 but place key visual elements in the center 1080 x 1080 area so they remain visible when TikTok crops the grid view.

Complete TikTok specs including ad formats: TikTok image size guide.

Pinterest Image Sizes

Pinterest is a visual search engine — image dimensions directly affect how much real estate your pin gets in the feed and how it performs in search results.

Format Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Standard pin 1000 x 1500 2:3 20 MB
Idea Pin 1080 x 1920 9:16 20 MB
Profile photo 165 x 165 (display) 1:1 10 MB
Board cover 222 x 150 (display) 16:9 10 MB

2:3 is the golden ratio for Pinterest. Taller pins (like 1000 x 2100) used to get more feed space, but Pinterest now truncates anything beyond 2:3 with a "Show more" tap. Stick to 1000 x 1500 for maximum visibility without truncation.

Full breakdown with ad specs and Idea Pin details: Pinterest image size guide.

YouTube Image Sizes

YouTube thumbnails are the single most important image for any creator — they directly drive click-through rate. But channel banners, profile pictures, and end screens also have strict requirements.

Element Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Thumbnail 1280 x 720 16:9 2 MB
Channel banner 2560 x 1440 16:9 6 MB
Profile picture 800 x 800 1:1
End screen element 1280 x 720 16:9
Watermark 150 x 150 1:1 1 MB

Channel banner safe zone: 1546 x 423 px (center). YouTube displays different crops on TV, desktop, tablet, and mobile. Everything outside the center safe zone gets cropped on smaller screens. Design your banner so logos and text stay within that area.

Thumbnails under 640px wide get rejected. Even with the correct 16:9 ratio, YouTube requires a minimum 640px width. Go with 1280 x 720 every time.

Discord Image Sizes

Discord compresses and crops images aggressively. Getting dimensions right prevents blurry avatars and cropped banners.

Element Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Profile avatar 128 x 128 1:1 8 MB
Profile banner 600 x 240 5:2 10 MB
Server icon 512 x 512 1:1 8 MB
Server banner 960 x 540 16:9 8 MB
Custom emoji 128 x 128 1:1 256 KB
Sticker 320 x 320 1:1 512 KB

Animated avatars and server icons require Nitro or server boost. GIF uploads are accepted but only animate if the user has Nitro (avatars) or the server is Boost Level 1+ (server icons). Without these, the first frame displays as a static image.

Reddit Image Sizes

Reddit has different display modes across old Reddit, new Reddit, and mobile — each crops banners differently. The new Reddit banner is extremely wide and narrow.

Image Type Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Subreddit banner (new Reddit) 4000 x 128 31.25:1 5 MB
Subreddit banner (old Reddit) 1920 x 384 5:1 500 KB
Mobile banner 1600 x 480 10:3 5 MB
Profile picture 256 x 256 1:1 5 MB
Community icon 256 x 256 1:1 256 KB
Post image Flexible Flexible 20 MB

The new Reddit banner (4000 x 128) is notoriously difficult to design for. It is essentially a thin strip. Use a simple pattern, gradient, or minimal text — detailed artwork gets lost at that aspect ratio.

WhatsApp Image Sizes

WhatsApp compresses every image you send — a 5 MB photo arrives as a ~100 KB blur. Optimizing before you send gives you control over what gets preserved.

Image Type Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Profile picture 640 x 640 1:1 ~2 MB
Status image 1080 x 1920 9:16 16 MB
Chat image 1600 x 900 16:9 16 MB (compressed to ~100 KB)
Group icon 640 x 640 1:1 ~2 MB
Channel cover 1280 x 720 16:9 5 MB

Pro tip: Send images as documents (attach > document) instead of photos to bypass WhatsApp's compression. The recipient gets the original file at full quality.

Shopify & Etsy Image Sizes

E-commerce image quality directly impacts conversion rates. Every 100ms of extra load time from oversized images costs roughly 1% in conversions.

Shopify

Image Type Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Target File Size
Product image 2048 x 2048 1:1 Under 200 KB
Collection image 1024 x 1024 1:1 Under 400 KB
Hero banner 1920 x 1080 16:9 Under 500 KB
Logo 450 x 250 Variable Under 50 KB
Blog featured image 1200 x 628 1.91:1 Under 300 KB

Full Shopify specs with optimization workflow: Shopify image size guide.

Etsy

Image Type Dimensions (px) Aspect Ratio Max File Size
Listing photo 2000 x 2000 1:1 or 5:4 1 MB per photo
Shop icon 500 x 500 1:1 1 MB
Big banner 3360 x 840 4:1 2 MB
Mini banner 1200 x 300 4:1 2 MB

Etsy allows up to 10 photos per listing. Use all 10 — listings with more photos rank higher in Etsy search.

How to Resize for Any Platform

You have an image. You need it at 1080 x 1350 for Instagram, 1200 x 630 for Facebook, and 1000 x 1500 for Pinterest. Here is how to do all three in under a minute.

Step 1: Open Pixotter's resize tool and drop your image. Everything runs in your browser — your image never leaves your device.

Step 2: Enter the target dimensions. For an Instagram feed post, that is 1080 width and 1350 height. Lock the aspect ratio if you want proportional scaling, or unlock it for an exact crop.

Step 3: Download your resized image. Then change the dimensions and resize again for the next platform.

Step 4: If any platform has a file size limit you are hitting (YouTube's 2 MB thumbnail limit is the usual culprit), compress the image after resizing. Pixotter typically reduces file size by 60-80% with no visible quality loss.

No account. No upload to a server. No watermark. The whole process takes seconds per image.

FAQ

What is the most common social media image size?

1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1 square) works on more platforms than any other single size. It displays correctly on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X without cropping. If you can only prepare one version of an image, make it 1080 x 1080.

Do social media platforms compress my images?

Yes, all of them. Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and X re-compress images on upload to reduce bandwidth. Uploading at the exact recommended resolution (not larger) and in JPG format at 80-85% quality gives the platform less to compress, which usually preserves more detail than uploading an oversized file and letting the platform handle the reduction.

Should I use PNG or JPG for social media?

JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with text or transparency. Social media platforms convert most uploads to JPG anyway, so starting with a well-compressed JPG at 80-85% quality gives you the most control over the final result. Use PNG only when you need transparent backgrounds or pixel-perfect text.

How often do social media image sizes change?

Platforms typically update dimensions 1-2 times per year, usually without announcement. Instagram last changed its supported aspect ratios in 2024. LinkedIn updated its banner specs in early 2025. This guide is current as of April 2026. Bookmark it — we update it whenever platforms change their specs.

What is a safe zone and why does it matter?

A safe zone is the area of an image guaranteed not to be covered by UI elements (buttons, text overlays, navigation bars) or cropped on different devices. Instagram stories, YouTube banners, and Facebook covers all have safe zones. Placing logos or text outside the safe zone means they get partially hidden on some devices.

Can I use one image size for all platforms?

Not perfectly, but 1200 x 630 pixels (1.91:1) is the closest thing to a universal size. It works as-is for Facebook posts, LinkedIn posts, X cards, and link previews across most platforms. It will get cropped on Instagram (which expects 1:1 or 4:5) and Pinterest (which prefers 2:3), so for those platforms you still need a dedicated version.

What file formats do social media platforms accept?

JPG and PNG are universally accepted. Most platforms also accept GIF (though some display only the first frame) and WebP. TikTok and YouTube accept MP4/MOV for video content. HEIC from iPhones is auto-converted to JPG by most platforms, but uploading JPG directly avoids potential quality loss from double conversion.
