What Is EXIF Data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in photos by cameras and smartphones. It includes camera settings, date/time, GPS location, device model, and more. While useful for photographers, EXIF data can be a privacy concern when sharing photos online — your location and device info may be visible to anyone who downloads the image.
Why Strip Metadata?
Privacy
Remove GPS coordinates, device serial numbers, and other identifying information before sharing photos online.
File Size
EXIF data can add several KB to each image. Stripping it reduces file size — helpful when optimizing for web.
Consistency
Ensure all uploaded images have clean metadata for e-commerce, portfolios, and professional publications.
Common Metadata Fields
| Field | Description | Privacy Risk |
|---|---|---|
| GPS Coordinates | Latitude/longitude where the photo was taken | High |
| Date/Time | When the photo was captured | Medium |
| Camera Model | Device make and model | Low |
| Lens Info | Focal length, aperture, ISO | Low |
| Software | Editing software used | Low |
| Copyright | Author and rights information | None |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is viewing and stripping metadata free on Pixotter?
Yes. View, edit, and strip metadata from unlimited images for free with no signup. Free tier supports up to 20 images per batch (10MB each). All processing happens in your browser — your images never leave your device.
How does browser-based metadata editing work?
Pixotter reads and modifies EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata directly in your browser. Your files are never uploaded — metadata is read from the image in memory on your device.
What metadata can I view and strip?
Pixotter reads EXIF data (camera model, settings, GPS location, date/time), IPTC data (caption, copyright, keywords), and XMP data. You can strip all metadata to protect your privacy, or selectively view specific fields before sharing.
Why should I strip metadata before sharing photos?
Photos from phones and cameras embed GPS coordinates, device model, exact date/time, and sometimes your name. Stripping metadata before sharing on social media, forums, or email protects your privacy and location. Pixotter does this instantly in your browser.
Can I strip metadata and compress in one step?
Yes. Use the pipeline configurator to chain Metadata Strip with Compress, Resize, Convert, or any other operation. For example, strip GPS data and compress for email — all in a single pipeline with no re-upload between steps.
